WHAT IS A CO CODE?
CO Codes (also referred to as Change Codes or Correction Codes) are codes generated by your patient's bank because either the patient's routing number, the account number, or both the routing number and account number were incorrect when the transaction was processed. A CO Code could also be generated by the patient's bank if the transaction type was incorrect (checking account vs. savings account). CO Codes only pertain to bank EFT transactions (not credit card transactions).
IS THERE A FEE ASSOCIATED WITH CO CODES?
Yes, the bank still charges the same fee as if the EFT transaction had been returned/rejected, which is $9.50 (even though the CO Code EFT transaction actually went through). The $9.50 reject fee will be charged the first week of the next month, along with your other processing fees.
DID THE EFT TRANSACTION WITH THE CO CODE GO THROUGH?
If you received an email regarding a CO Code, the EFT transaction did go through and will be [Accepted] on your Posted Payment Report. The EFT transaction (with the incorrect routing/account number or incorrect transaction type) should have been returned, however, the patient's bank was able to determine the correct information, therefore the EFT transaction was processed.
WHAT DOES EACH CO CODE MEAN?
- C01: Invalid Account number
- C02: Invalid Routing Number
- C03: Invalid Routing & Account number
- C05: Invalid Transaction Code (Checking vs. Savings)
- C06: Incorrect Account Number and Transaction Code (Checking vs. Savings)
